It's a good campaign, started in the Netherlands too

Total is one of the largest investors in Burma
The campaign basically says, leave Burma or do something to improve the situation there!

Total is making much profit there
The government of Burma also earns much money
Total probably prefers to keep the situation as it is right now,
always easier doing business with dictators than with democracies...
and of course the generals of Burma also prefer that matters remain as they are

Under pressure, under a boycott, perhaps Total will take some action
They CAN and they should!!
No matter what their contract says!!!
(can you believe it, there's a clause that they are not allowed to interfere in politics at all and they signed it??!!)
They are in part financing this dictatorship.

I hope this leads to something better
At least the release of Aung San Suu Kyi

Waar bemoeien ze zich mee!!!

Potjandorie, zullen we ver-Americaniseerd worden via een achterdeur nogwel!!!

Ze mogen hun neus uit onze zaken houden, wij zitten echt niet te wachten op het Amerikaans model van verpaupering en tweedeling!
Mischien wat magertjes, maar de solidariteit in Nederland is nog steeds sterker dan "ikke, laat de rest stikke"!!

IMF: Nederland moet tekort terugdringen

WASHINGTON (ANP) - De Nederlandse regering moet haar begrotingstekort verlagen. Tegelijkertijd moet ze de werkgelegenheid bevorderen om de internationale concurrentiepositie te verbeteren.

Dat stelt het Internationaal Monetair Fonds (IMF) in een donderdag gepubliceerd rapport.

Bovenal moeten de beleidsmakers zorgen voor economisch herstel. Daar lijkt maar geen tempo in te komen, aldus het IMF. Daarom moet Nederland zijn internationale concurrentiepositie, die in de afgelopen jaren achteruit is gesukkeld, weer versterken. Daarmee kan Nederland ten volle profiteren van de verwachte groei van de exportmarkten.

De economische groei blijft met 0,5 procent dit jaar nog bescheiden, maar volgend jaar komt er vaart in. Dan voorziet het IMF een groei van 1,9 procent. Daarmee zit het IMF precies tussen de ramingen van het Centraal Planbureau (CPB) dat 2,0 procent verwacht en die van De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). Die verwacht een economische groei van 1,8 procent in 2006.

De beleidsmakers in Den Haag dienen vooral orde op zaken te stellen in de begroting en de staatsschuld, aldus het IMF. Dat is nodig om de kosten van vergrijzing in de hand te kunnen houden. Ook kan de regering op die manier buffers opbouwen die nodig zijn om onvoorziene posten te dekken alsmede de aanhoudende risico’s die voortvloeien uit de kosten voor de gezondheidszorg.

Het IMF heeft waardering voor de inspanningen van de coalitieregering. Vooral voor de loonmatiging die het kabinet-Balkenende vorig jaar afsprak met de vakbonden en werkgevers krijgt de ministersploeg de handen van het IMF op elkaar. Dat vergroot immers de concurrentiepositie, geeft het fonds aan. Daarbij onderstreept het IMF echter dat Nederland de loonmatiging moet volhouden om de exportsector een dragende pijler onder de economische groei te maken.

In het rapport noemt het IMF tevens stijging van de arbeidsparticipatie om de groei van de economie op te krikken. De maatregelen die Den Haag heeft getroffen om de uitkeringen voor arbeidsongeschikten en werklozen binnen de beperken te houden, hebben eveneens instemming vanuit Washington ontmoet. Wel voegt het IMF daar meteen aan toe dat de regering in het verkorten van de WW-uitkering best wat verder mag gaan.

This was an attack waiting to happen.
Most people expected it, and even expected it to be the underground.

Personally, I think it could have been much worse, in rush hour traffic I think the death toll could have been thousands in a co-ordinated attack.
I am so very glad they did not go for the scale and precision I expected.
I realise that this is a poor consolation for those who were injured, those who died and the loved ones they left behind.

This attack I lie at the feet of those who planned it, and also at the feet of Bush and Blair.
This is their perfect little storm.

Once again, it's the little people, the working folk, that are hurt.

And, I believe they will keep on hurting.
Bush and Blair will grasp this attack to intensify their "war on terra"
Pushing for more intrusive legislation, more financial means to fight, less oversight when it comes to prisons and interrogation methods and perhaps, who knows, even the draft in the USA.

Secretly, some neocons must be gloating.

I wonder which western country is next.
